When our customers want a truly one-of-a-kind gate masterpiece, the design phase can be quite extensive.  The last thing I want is for the final proof to be different, in any way, from the final product.  For this reason we take a pretty original approach to gate manufacturing.

For starters, exacting site measurements are taken before any real design work begins. It’s important to understand the site requirements as well as the functional requirements of a gate or fence system.  At that time we take an assortment of digital photos, both to help us remember the site, and to be used on mock-ups.

Once we have some size guidelines, the design phase proceeds.  Since the image is built at actual size (in the software)  proportions and measurements are absolute. This allows us to design the virtual gate or fence system to tolerances of less than 1/8th inch.

When we’re getting close to dialing in exactly what the customer wants, we start to overlay images of the gate onto the digital photos.  This allows our client to appreciate the eventual scale and appearance of the gate.

Once everything is good and the customer has signed off on the design phase, construction begins.  In order to exactly replicate the digital design we actually print the image out, full-size, on one or more huge pieces of paper (thank you Kinkos ; ).

By printing on a large format printer we now have an actual-size print of the final product.  This allows us to cut each individual component and lay it over the paper to ensure a perfect fit.

The tack welds are actually applied while the components are laying on the paper pattern. This step is performed carefully; but is critical to ensure that what our client receives is exactly what they approved.

Once welded together, the gate is checked again for fit before heading off to the powder coating facility.
